Inspired by artists like Stereolab and Broadcast, Operelly’s music weaves delicate electronic and acoustic elements into a form Olivia calls “tiptoe music.” Olivia grew up writing poetry, short stories, and songs before discovering music production through the free GarageBand app. She graduated from UC Berkeley in 2025 and has since split her time between Brooklyn and LA.
*FLUTTERS AWAY* follows the debut EP Handwriting Practice No. 1 from last year, which established Operelly as one of the most promising new voices in music. The upcoming EP tells the story of a relationship falling apart due to miscommunication. Delicate electro-acoustic arrangements are interspersed with the static sounds of radio interference, as if the broken communication described in the lyrics has also pierced the songs themselves.
The opening line of the EP, “When I tell my man I write all my songs about him, he doesn't seem very flattered”, sets a playfully biting tone that runs through all five tracks. “The fact that a lover can be critical or anxious about work that is clearly about them is something I rarely see songwriters discuss,” says Operelly. “And that surprises me, because it has been a recurring issue in my relationships, especially with other writers. They understand the power of words and how they can be used against you.”
