About Ververs

VERVERS is Cinetol's interdisciplinary residency, offering four artists the space to develop and deepen their music through influences from other art forms. Throughout the program, participants work under the guidance of coaches with backgrounds in both art and music. They explore how approaches and techniques from various disciplines can contribute to their own work, with the goal of innovating and strengthening their music and live performances.

Over the course of ten months, the residents use Cinetol's facilities to rehearse and develop a multidisciplinary live show. In addition, they attend workshops on themes such as performance, interdisciplinary practice, directing, and visuals. VERVERS is aimed at musicians who write their own material, are looking to grow within their practice, and are open to collaboration and new ways of working.

Yulya Divakova (they/them) is a music artist based in Amsterdam. They have released their music under the moniker Giant Julie, produced and performed on the record Public Relations by Public Relations, recorded and mixed Lewsberg’s last album Out and About, and are currently mixing the debut album of the Klittens.

‍

Ververs is an opportunity for them to focus on their new body of work and facilitate the shift towards collaboration and multidisciplinarity in their practice. They are interested in creating a performance environment that promotes comfort for both the audience and the artist.

‍

Beatrice Sberna’s sound is a thing of her own.

‍

She is a vocalist, improviser, and bass player, and compelling voice in the emerging European experimental scene. Coming from a jazz background and a deep love for Italian music, she isn’t afraid to dirty up her roots, drawing influences from noise and other unexpected genres.

‍

Clumsy, sweet, paranoid, and annoyingly sharp, her wide range of personality traits emerges on stage through a strong theatrical presence, a versatile voice, and emotionally charged performances. Her music moves freely across genres, guided by a sharp sense of irony and a desire to shape an honest sound that remains coherent with her own story.

‍

She believes in improvisation as a way to counter the apathy of the world, embracing acoustic music that steals from the electronic sound world, and loves to provoke her audience by giving them what they don’t expect, while allowing herself to do the same.

‍

George Demetriou is a Cypriot composer-performer, working with multidisciplinarity. His work often weaves together electroacoustic music and staged elements derived from forms remniscent of opera, musical theater and film.

‍

With a background in experimental songwriting and live performance, George's sound world proposes a DIY spirit to contemporary chamber music and electronica. This dialogue is ever-present in his original theater productions, as well as his live projects: the band 'slowblink' and his solo work under the alias 'GOATMOTHER'.

Una Jongenelis (1997) is an Amsterdam-based musician and visual artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans film, painting, drawing, books, and music. In her most recent work, an animated short called 'Thunderhead', she explores the depths of anxiety and panic attacks. During the VERVERS residency she will focus on implementing visual arts in the music and develop a brand new persona and musical act.
