Superfan is the songwriting veil of Kali Priya Flanagan, a Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist, producer, and prodigal son. Beginning music at age four and writing songs at eleven, Flanagan signed his first record deal at fourteen while developing his craft across piano, drums, bass, upright bass, and violin. Now twenty-one and newly signed to London label AD93 alongside artists such as Joanne Robertson, YHWH Nailgun, and Dagmar Zuniga, Superfan is preparing the release of his sophomore album, My Piledriver Heart (MPDH). The record marks the birth of “Acousticello,” the ongoing live collaboration between Flanagan and cellist Omeed Almassi that has shaped both his recordings and performances over the past two years. Built around extensive string arrangements with naturalistic intent and pop magnetism, the ten-track record reflects a shift from the raw immediacy of his debut, Tow Truck Jesus, into a more mature, melancholic perspective on love, identity, and interpersonal distance—written largely in friends’ living rooms and shaped by a process of observation, memory, and fragmented lyricism.

‍

Rooted in the interplay between Almassi’s virtuosic cello and Flanagan’s downtuned acoustic guitar—shaped in part by his Indian heritage and referencing Eastern string traditions—the Superfan Acousticello sound operates as a blurred, unified instrument, further refined in the basement studio “Chateau Hardware” alongside co-producer Hudson Pollock. Across MPDH, the duo transforms this intimate setup into expansive, impressionistic arrangements that resist categorization. They are informed by inspirations including Ryuichi Sakamoto, The Sea and Cake, Cat Power, Low, and Sigur Rós, as well as the vocal traditions of Elizabeth Fraser, Beth Gibbons, Rufus Wainwright, and Harriet Wheeler. Now based in Brooklyn after early success under his former moniker “KALI” in Los Angeles, Flanagan has become part of a new experimental singer-songwriter and cello-driven scene, collaborating widely across New York’s underground while extending Acousticello into other artists’ work, all while balancing ongoing touring, academic study at Hunter College, and a growing presence across experimental and indie music circles.
